Text Box: How Blackbox Diagnostics Work... Text Box: The really clever trick is to use a separate computer to act as a server, meaning the Main Unit (PC) performs only the role of menu selection and information display. By using only a very simple browser style software program similar to internet explorer - Vehicle Explorer, made for vehicles, it can now treat the Vehicle Server and connected vehicle system ECUs no differently than it would any of the millions of information serving computers (web servers) that make up the modern internet. However, where information servers on the internet can be many thousand miles away, often creating substantial delays as the information seeks connection, moves backward and forward etc, in this case the source of the information is in directly connected and as such the information is provided and tasks undertaken nearly instantly. This means that just as you could click on text links in a web browser such as internet explorer, to see a page of real time information such as sun strength, wind speed, humidity, air temperature and so forth derived from a computer set up as a server at a weather station in Alaska, or to see a page of stored information such as a list of dates of storms that the station recorded over the last 3 months, you can now also click on text links the Vehicle Explorer software that shows you real time information such as power output, engine speed, fuel temperature, engine temperature etc. All this derived from the small computer set up as a server that you have plugged into your vehicle's diagnostic socket. Of course, you can also click on links to see a list of all the stored faults as well as many hundreds of other possibilities. Besides being so easy to use, being so fast, having such a dedicated computer as the Vehicle Server handling all the timing critical communications instead of the typical approach of using the Main Unit, it has another huge benefit. In common with nearly all computer systems, the Main Unit runs a multitasking operating system. This means that the processor in the Main Unit has to share its time typically between dozens of applications. Even basic tasks such as monitoring the keyboard, mouse and ports, refreshing its memory, redrawing the screen, moving the cursor and the actual time sharing program itself, are all requirements of any menu selection and display program. This means that the period of the processor's attention and time to a task or how long before it will return to that task simply cannot be guaranteed. Imagine for example, how hard it would be to time something that needs to take exactly 15 seconds if you only get to look at your watch at unknown periods of anywhere between 10 and 30 second intervals. Understanding this fundamental and unavoidable variation in timing accuracy explains the degree of unreliability of timing and communications between PCs and vehicle ECUs. Naturally, this most often results in constantly unexplained failures in communications, especially during the more critical stage of waking up and initialising communications. ROVACOM & FAULTAMTE ingenious solutions of using one computer (Main Unit - PC) for the selection / display of information and another computer (Vehicle Server) acting as a server, dedicated entirely to the task of communicating with the vehicle ECU, provides not only the very greatest degrees of capability in providing intuitive and easy to use menus with very graphic display capabilities, but more importantly provides absolutely unprecedented levels of communication reliability with the vehicle ECUs. Indeed, either computer can be entirely reset and rebooted without affecting the other which means that things like cranking the vehicle's engine can be performed with no ill effect or loss of communications between the two.
